The PCB probe into the Oval Test debacle

The PCB probe into the Oval Test debacle

In order to resolve the issue once and for all, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed a three-member committee to probe into the ‘forfeit’ of the match played between Pakistan and England in 2006.

Do you think the probe will yield any results? If so, what action should be taken against those found responsible?

PCB is presently composed of corrupted individuals. Corruption is rampant within the PCB, and it’s chief patron – Mr. Zardari (also known as Mr. 10%) is a corrupted man himself. Even some past Paki players have admitted to accepting bribes (Salim Altaf, Asif Iqbal) and lose games in return for monetary gains. How do you then expect a body like the ICC, comprising members from various criketing nations, to rule in favor of pakistan, when the sole ICC contributor – India, where real money is now – is at logger heads with pak. Even Malaysia – which is a Muslim country – refused to let it’s Hockey team tour pakistan for lack of security reasons. So then why is pak blaming Australia, England, India when your own Muslim brothers are refusing to come and play Hockey in pak due to presence of TTP and various other dangerous organizations. C’mon man, Be serious and be truthful about the situation in pak today: what’s the point in touring pak when you are surrounded by 100s of para military soldiers guarding you to the stadium just to play a game of criket? Is that a realistic scenario when you visit Australia or England or New Zealand – do you (pak players) – see a sea of para military forces guarding you day and night? And if so, how would you feel about that? And what would be going through your minds? Be honest and realistic about the present situation in pakistan and then talk. A Muslim talking straight talk. Saif Aly, England.

This turmoil has only one solution & that is, the rule book which is bible for ICC created jointly by ICC & ECB. As per rule awarding the match to one team in event of disciplinary act the Umpires have first to call upon both the defaulting as well as the other captain in presence of match referee & after listening to the argument that lead to the stalemate then & only then a match could be ended & awarded to either team. Besides it appears that Umpire in default was in hurry to award the match to England for reasons well known to him.. Had he a soft corner for English team?

    Hi friends,

I think Pakistan cricket has to move on. Blaming poor administrators in one thing but the players are needed to show passion too. I once used to admire the way Pakistanis play cricket. It was the aggression and passion shown by Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis etc., which helped you guys to reach almost the top of the ladder in world cricket. Right now there is nobody in the Pakistani team with that kind of spirit and commitment. It is in the best interest of the cricketing world that Pakistan rediscovers itself and start playing like the old times. This will also reignite the Indo-Pak rivalry (I mean cricket, I don’t want rivalry between us in any other field!). A small message from an Indian and a sports lover.

I think ICC is confused and making biased decisions. I dont know on what basis they made their last decision and on what basis they have reverted that decision. What I think is that the ICC did not want to make the decision of declaring that test a draw but they did that under Asian Block pressure and now as India in no more an ally of Pakistan in Asian block they have reverted that decision. ICC should realize that they are international body and it should work according to the rules and regulations which is best for the game. ICC should control those Boards who are trying to undermine its authoritiy through their financial means.

I do not understand the character of PCB- how low you can get?
Why would we recommend that IPL reduce the ban on Mohammad Asif? He is a disgrace for the nation. Why are we even talking about him? He should be made history to set an example for the new talented cricketers in the country.

He has let Pakistan’s name on dirt for the third time with dope related problems. Pakistani cricket needs character, and we have lost it completely. No wonder why we are isolated.

There is no point in further investigating the issue. It’s all about power and nothing else.

A few months ago, before the Mumbai attacks, the PCB and the powerful BCCI were on very good terms. So the “Asian bloc” managed to have the Oval Test declared as tied (or abandoned… not quite sure).

Now, the BCCI and PCB are not on good terms, so naturally the ICC has gone back and given the match to England. It is part of the pressure tactics adopted by India on Pakistan.

As far as Inzi’s decision goes, I recall watching Darrel Hair on the field penalizing Pakistan on charges of ball-tampering. At that time, one of the commentators, Nasser Hussain, said that if his team was accused of such a crime, he would walk off the field there and then. But later on, everyone was accusing Inzi of being unprofessional.

I believe any patriotic person who had any respect for his country would do the same thing. It is easy to criticize someone from beyond the boundary.

Apparently PCB does not have much of a say in the ICC. In my opinion, the committee will not be able to achieve much unless the Govt. of Pakistan empowers and fully supports the PCB in all their actions. Furthermore, with the state of affairs of cricket in Pakistan, the country has lost its value in world cricket. It would be better that new energetic young ex-cricketers are inducted into PCB along with powerful citizens.

We seem to have lost track of the real issue, which was the forfeited test match. I would say whoever decided to award the match should get his faculties examined. There was only one winner when the match was stopped. It certainly was not England. Only MCC could say otherwise. England needs every bit of a point in the face of the beating they took at the hands of Windies.

It’s just not about re-changing the decision. It’s highlighting the presence, the influence of Pakistan Cricket Board in the cricket community. Not just the Oval scenario but also the switch of Champion’s Trophy shows the value of Pak Cricket. And I may not be wrong if i say Pak cricket has been ISOLATED. Reason: A trend set by previous boards and the ignorance of our current Board. The only cure or hope to revive the Pak Cricket is firm, in fact very firm leadership in front not only in the field but in the board itself. A Leader who himself is influential and only one name comes to my mind, Imran Khan. who has and is proving that he can DO IT!

I think that the whole issue is created again by the ICC. The Oval test was history, it was declared a drawn test but the ICC is corrupt and shown double standards in the past to a great extent. Pakistan did not even play a single test last year. Even Bangladash, which is not a better team than Pakistan, played several tests. I think the PCB should take strong action against the ICC and bring the whole ICC Committee to court and my advice is to all cricket nations that Pakistan deserved to play both Test and one day cricket so all the teams such as Australia, England and S.Africa should tour Pakistan for full test and ODI series.

Why do we insist on futility. What are we trying to achieve? The result we can do nothing about. All we now can do is further drag Pakistan’s name in mud. Maybe that is the agenda. To have Inzamam and Sheryar back in the dock and force them to say that Pakistan should have not stopped playing. That day what Inzamam did was right.

By trying to make out that he was wrong, what do they hope to achieve? Insults and nothing else. We love to have mud thrown at the country and its great cricketers.

To be honest what to talk about cricket when whole country is in doldrums.

If we talk about cricket, I’ll say scrap the whole PCB structure and set some standards. Like what happens in other countries, define a process for election of the whole staff. What does the president or his advisers know about cricket or simply about management that they can choose someone to head PCB?

In my opinion PCB should be an autonomous body with its own structure and its own rules and regulations.

ICC is totally biased entity although its great that Pakistan wants to interfere becuse ICC is just for Aus and England and India as well.

Haddin in recent series cheated by dislodging bails before ball hit the stumps but there was no action by ICC. He needs to be banned.

    Dear Friends,

Pakistani cricket is in a sorry state. Indian Cricket has emerged as #1 while Pakistani cricket has taken a nose dive.

Let us begin with the appoinment of Mr Ejaz Butt; to begin with he should be thrown out off all the PCB affairs. Secondly who is there to run PCB? Can we find anyone in the country who is honest, dedicated & amply qualified to run PCB? To my knowledge few names pop up, if they will be interested or not that is another question. Can we take advice from Imran Khan, Waqar Younus, Wasim Akram and remove the ban of icl players get the best players back in the team start all over again.

    Thank you,
    Pier

This another drama of unprofessional PCB. What the heck is this three member committee going to do? Oval test is history and for god sake “Let it go” and LOOK FORWARD towards making Pakistan a strong cricketing nation. Look at India, they are leaping forward. They have some great players, professional setup, sound domestic cricket culture and an administration which is corrupt (which is typical in our region) but makes sure that Indian cricket goes upwards. Same way we should take some positive steps in making Pakistan cricket strong.

It is a shame that many cricket governing bodies are hostage to ICC – a biased entity. They should not be the dictator of the game. In a way they have double standards. Some countries have been awarded too many tests in a year while others have played none, like Pakistan.

I think cricket-playing nations have to realize that ICC is a biased organization and countries should be independent of such an organization and boycott its events. This will greatly help the game and we will see more fans of cricket and more fun when rival nations meet. It really does not matter who won the test. I think there was a language and to some extent race barrier when the match was declared in England’s favor. I hope that cricket fans and organizations would heed the advice to boycott ICC events and form few new entities that organize the game of cricket in a more attractive way – between countries and clubs from all over the planet.

I think cricket fans should learn from Dr. Iqbal’s poem:

Tahi (ICC-only yours) zindagi se nahi yeh fizaae
Yaha saikdoon kaarvaan aur bhi hai

Kina’at (contentment) na kar aalam-e-rang-o-bu par
Chaman aur bhi, aashiyaan aur bhi hai

It won’t… the MCC and the ICC don’t intend on changing the result, so what good is a probe for something that happened in 2006? Are they really going to call in Inzamam, Shahryar Khan or Zaheer Abbas? How is anyone who is currently not associated with the board going to be punished!!?
