For the first time I noticed a heavy presence of Rangers. The only people who have so far been spared by the police and security personnel are the media, but I don’t know how long it will last. Updated at 11:40 am, Islamabad:
While we get our updates from Lahore, Dawn.com’s Musadiq Sanwal in Islamabad informs us that the city seems sleepy and quiet like most cities on Sunday mornings. There is very little traffic and no excitement on the roads. Generally streets are deserted, while rumours and speculations grow over the mornings’ developments so far. According to the word on the street, Shahbaz Sharif has evaded house arrest and has gone into hiding.
Updated at 11:30 am, Lahore:

A dozen PML-N activists defy barricades and run towards the high court waving party flags and raising slogans for Nawaz Sharif. Police wield batons but allow them to proceed. None of them have been arrested so far either.
Updated at 11:15 am, Lahore:
Minutes before news came in that Aitzaz Ahsan had been arrested in Lahore, a helicopter was seen circling the Lahore High Court. Speculations rose on who it belonged to and who was inside. Salman Taseer? Possible, some thought. Some leading civil society activists including Hina Jilani and Shahtaj Qizalbash have also arrived at the high court.
Updated at 11:00 am, Lahore:
Scores of camera crew, reporters and analysts – including a few foreigners – stand vigilant outside Lahore High Court. From inside the court premises, revolutionary songs blare out. Some excited lawyers climb the gate, waving fists and yelling out slogans. Police and rangers stand guard throughout the area.
Updated at 10:50 am, Lahore:
At the last barricade between The Mall and McLeod Road, I had to show my press card and do some cajoling and convincing to enter the area in front of the Lahore High Court where all the action is supposed to be. The road, as expected, is deserted, barricaded and lined by dozens of policemen.
Updated at 10:45 am, Lahore:
Barricades reappear near the Lahore Hotel on McLeod Road. In the nearby Royal Park, breakfast is being sold and people wait around in lines to buy their meal.
Updated at 10:35 am, Lahore:
On the entire length of the Allama Iqbal Road between Dharampura and the railway station, there are no barricades visible. It appears to be a usual Sunday morning with some shops open, traffic lazily moving along and random kites flying in the neighbourhoods. Only roads approaching the Mall are blocked but life’s going as usual otherwise.
Updated at 10:25 am, Lahore:
On the intersection between the Mall and Zafar Ali Road, police stands guard, stopping traffic from entering the Mall. Less than 200 meters to the north of the Mall, life seems to be going on as usual. No police pickets are visible and young boys crowd the streets playing cricket. Business in this area remains unaffected as shops are opened and life continues normally.
Updated at 10:15 am, Lahore:
Half a dozen policemen stand at barricades near Sherpao Bridge. Jail Road has been closed.
Updated at 10:00 am, Lahore:
As news reports come in about Nawaz Sharif being placed under house-arrest, Herald’s bureau chief Muhammad Badar Alam updates Dawn.com on the street scene in Lahore: A lone policeman manning a barrier near Gulberg’s Main Market, diverts traffic away from the Main Boulevard. The road seems to be off-limits for everything moving on wheels.
6.00 PST
What should be a sleepy Sunday in Lahore is shaping up to be anything but. Lawyers and political activists of the PML-N are expected to descend on the city from across the country via plane, train, and automobile. Students from Lahore’s private and public universities are scheduled to congregate at Zaman Park before marching towards Mall Road to join the lawyers’ protest. It remains to be seen whether PML-N party workers, who have reportedly been in hiding for days, will emerge on the streets of Lahore today. Either way, those who have seen the Long March this far are determined to make their way to Islamabad in the course of the day, against all odds.
The possibility of a last minute reprieve also remains on the cards, after the federal government announced late last evening that it would file a review petition with the Supreme Court against the Sharif suspension, and Nawaz Sharif announced that he was open to ’round table talks’ hosted by Prime Minister Gilani.
Meanwhile, the announcement late last night that fuel supplies from Karachi to other parts of the country had been halted has caused alarm amongst those Pakistanis who are not directly involved with the Long March. Is the public’s patience wearing thin on day four of the lawyers’ protest?

The latest reports being that the chief justice is going to be restored, I hope the people of pakistan realize that it was the United States that once again has helped Pakistan back from the brink. It’s high time that the people of Pakistan realize that in order to have a prosperous country they will have to show the same public protests against the Taliban and their supporters as they showed against Zardari for his actions.

Zardri&Sharif should step doown.both parties should call leadership election within their parties.
it is very strange kind of democracy in pakistan.where all political parties are personal propeties of the party leaders.
ppp(bhuto)18year old son is nominated by his mother IN HER will.other party is Muslim Leag Nawaz(OWNED BY NAWAZ).
BOTH LEADERS SHOULD BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR
PAST.
IN PAKISTAN WHO HIRE&FIRED JUDGES?
IS THIS BY ARMY OR PRESIDENT OR PARLIMENT OR
IS ALSO A PRIVATE OWNERSHIP LIKE THEIR POLITICAL LEADERS.
WHAT A DEMOCRACY.

I am simply ashamed of calling myself as pakistani because of all the political turmoil and the extremism taking place in the country. I think democracy is not the way for the people of pakistan. we have seen as far as martial law was intact, atleast law and order situation and some economic development was seen. But now since zardaris and shariffs are in the picture again same situation is taking place. what good is the democracy for this country because we have seen only one of the two families ruling this country no matter how honest or dishoest the elections are. Either this country deserves a changed leadership like Imran Khan or martial law is the way to go for these people.

it is very regretted to see the comments given by the brothers about the long march, simply to understand that rule of law is a neccessity for every courntary and society and if there is nothing to provide the justice to the peoples of a countary or socity it means the society behavior just like a rule of jungle there pricipal is only power, being a good citizen of a countary it is very necessary for us to fight for rule of law. Due to situation and history of our countary often the correct persons are distrub and due illetracy of the society the cheeters take power. This a time to support to every person ,party, who promote the system of our countary and it becomes only a way to take decesion according the constitution and a free and fair judicary. My brothers of the countary mentaly and theoritically impreses with west due to their dicipline and honesty but they regrete they achieved the targets and manners with a only way that is rule of law.please support every movement of any group or party which are fighting for rule of law otherwise the same situation will be continue and every looters and corrupt leaders enjoys with the resources of our poor countary and run away.
March 16th, 2009 at 4:31
I guess we should call President Musharaf to restore the law and order situation in Pakistan and once again send Nawaz Sharif and likes to Saudi Arabia for atleast another 10 years. If I am not wrong this nonsense has started ever since he is back in the country.
March 16th, 2009 at 0:43
Well I hope Nawaz succeed becuase he is last resort of Pakistan. Otherwise corrupt current leadership will sell Pakistan.
March 16th, 2009 at 0:03
To the common people in Pakistan I can only say that Please do not get emotional upon this so called long march or lawyers movement
All this is for personal vendetta and power hungry politicians.
Neither Zardari nor Sharifs have ever had love for independent Judiciary. Not to mention the deposed chief Justice who has turned into politician
March 15th, 2009 at 23:58
I am very amazed by reading/listening local as well as forign TV channels that they called this long march a political game instead of the march for the independence of juidiiary. They divert the world attraction from the goal.In their country it lies in the human rights domain but in third world country its the political issue. This movement is running for the last two years not for the last month after the decision came against the sharif brothers.
At that time we have to give the clear meassage to the world that we are fighting for our basic rights. So at this time everyone should support the lawyers atleast morlally.
Its not the time to discuss either the politians loyality , they are for better than us who only speak in the drawing rooms. How we expect them to take strong decision in the favor of nation without the support of the peoles. In pakistan people only speak but does not take one step out from their houses.
March 15th, 2009 at 23:34
It is unfortunate that Pakistan has this kind of leadership.
What Sharif is fighting for is gain power again. Is there anyone in PAKISTAN with clean record interested in running the country. What about Justice Iftiqar?
As an Indian living in U.S. I wish the people of Pakistan well and hope this does not lead to empowering the extremist religious zealots.
March 15th, 2009 at 21:15
It is absolutely wrong to allege that Nawaz Sharif is hungry for power. Infact, it is the repeated violations by Zardari, even after swearing on Koran for the reinstatement of Judges, and of the agreements reached with Nawaz Sharif, that PML-N has taken to this long march protest. The reinstatement by Musharraf under pressure of western powers and waiving of all charges against Zardari, was all illegal. Imran Khan is right when he says that Zardari does not want reinstatement of Judges because he is afraid that Zardari’s past would be ripped open and he will have to surrender the Presidency.
March 15th, 2009 at 20:07
I think that this is the time for PM Yousuf Raza Gilani to rise for the occasion and prove that he is the constitutional head of of the country and resolve the crises through parlimentary menas even that means sacking of President Zardari through parliamentary process. I am sure that all right minded members will rise to save the constitution and country.
March 15th, 2009 at 19:24
Surely the interest of the country is greater than the interest of the protagonists, the Sharif brothers and the son-in-law of Zulfikar Bhutto. Would it not be better if all three of them are disqualified from holding elected office, none of them have shown much understanding of the requirement of an independent judiciary in a democracy,so that new leaders could emerge?
The present crisis has come about because the brothers have been disqualified by the courts from holding elected office. If the disqualification were extended by public demand to Zardari, Pakistan would go a long way towards the restoration of democracy.
March 15th, 2009 at 19:02
I strongly feel that something better is going to happen in Pakistan with this revolution. Neither Sharif, Zardari or dictatorship should rule the country. Nawab is an opportunist and hungry for power. Pakistan at this hour needs a young and dynamic leader. May peace be restored as soon as possible in Pakistan.
March 15th, 2009 at 17:18
I agree with most of the comments mentioned before me and I believe that the PML-N and the Sharifs have only vested interest in this Long March. But I believe these kind of demonstrations do give us a chance to manifest what the people want.
Justice Chaudrey might not be as independent as some people might want, but it’s a small step for a relatively new democratic country and at this point any step towards the right direction is a huge leap for Pakistan.
May the Long March be a success. It might not be entirely honest but it’s a small step towards the so called democratic rights.
March 15th, 2009 at 17:17
This is political drama like I have never seen before. These protests have a way of turning out in a way no body can predict. May be some good can come out of this cathartic political experience that Pakistan is going through. General Kayani seems to be showing a lot of restrain. I am amazed how Zardari has maintained his hold on power, it seems though the Ides of March are not in his favor. I wish good luck to the people of Pakistan.
March 15th, 2009 at 16:48
If the Jamaat-i-Islami was not behind the lawyers’ movement like a rock, the Sharifs and PML N would have compromised with the ‘puppets of America’ very long before. Pakistan’s curse is that it doesn’t have or it does not know a third option other than the PPP and the PML-N, which are equally worse than the other.
March 15th, 2009 at 16:22
Not a single politician in pakistan is loyal to the nation. They are all theives and filling their pockets.
March 15th, 2009 at 16:03
Judiciary must not be used for personal purposes. We need a leader not someone who is cold to human emotions and their needs. Not someone who can get his hands dirty with illegal money and killings. We need a leader who feels and talk for the people. People of Pakistan wants peace and justice, nobody wants blood shed, insecurity, food shortage, unreal price hikes for the benefit of the gov. We had two true leaders one has met her fate, the other is doing the right thing for democracy better than anyone else without bias. -May Pakistan live long-
March 15th, 2009 at 15:31
just stupidity …..both political parties are killing poor people…..i will not blame this to our politicians ,,,,i will blame our people who voted them…..who are with them……. i request you all to open your eyes and look upon your country…its our motherland……..only those nations will get good sincere leaders who are sincere to their country………..

We need real change, but we cannot be sure what that means. The current government either has to succumb to the demands of the public or it has to go. But do we really want PML-N either? Would that qualify as change?
We have been talking about new ‘fresh’ leaders for so long now. Somehow we are destined to go back and forth through a 3-way tennis game (ok bad analogy) between the PPP, PML and the military. What does change mean then?
I understand what we are fighting for, but we still need to figure out who can lead us to where we want to be.

This is just dirty political game and poor people are risking their lives and pride to help these leaders achieving their motives which is power only, I am confident that not even a single person participatng in these rallys exactly know what they are trying to achieve ultimately and how judges restoration will bring any political or economic stability to the country?
March 15th, 2009 at 13:16
I have no hope from our current political leaders. They have no democracy within their own parties
March 15th, 2009 at 12:37
GOD SAVE PAKISTAN BY GIVING SINCERE PEOPLE PARTICULARLY FROM YOUNG GENERATION TO LEAD THE COUNTRY SINCERELY TOWARDS PROGRESSIVE PATH.
March 15th, 2009 at 12:32
Yes, there is hope, but no clear leader seems to have emerged, who can make something out of the whole mess these politicians have managed to dig themselves in. Let us pray to God that a stronger Pakistan, which cares for the welfare of its own people, instead of inciting violence among others, comes out of this situation like a rising Phoenix. People of Pakistan, we from India are with you in your prayers for a prosperous and strong Pakistan.
March 15th, 2009 at 9:25
What will happens now we got to see is any one will rise from it or it is going to be a same face with different name I think the name of politician changes in Pakistan not their habits they always beat s on the same bush well I hope and pray and try to do my best in California working towards creating new generation to be involved in the politic in United State Of America and I am happy to say this we would the first in this country to hold any big political group in very near future.
March 15th, 2009 at 9:10

March 15th, 2009 at 8:33
1.i understand frustration of sharifs both convicted felons for being barred by constitution from political office. but what i do not understand is that lawyers being sucked into politics. their movement for chaudry’s reinstatement to chief judge post will not necessarily make judiciary independent.2. lawyers should form or join a political party get elected and pass a law. i know it is not that simple. i want these politicians to do some thing for the people.
March 15th, 2009 at 7:44
How does Mr Zardari expect to lead Pakistan in this no-win situation. If he succeeds in thwarting the march, he will be regarded as a violent dictator; if he caves in, he will be a weak ruler.

Cutting off fuel supplies from Karachi to other parts of the country is similar to the blocked of Gaza by Israel to dissuade Palestinian in Gaza from supporting Hamas.
