Killing ‘em softly with their fingers

Killing ‘em softly with their fingers

I think what Younus Khan really meant to say was: ‘we hope to whitewash them one day.’ But what a performance by the Australians yesterday. Wow! A perfect demonstration of how to break down a team mentally. The Australian finger spinners, led by Nathan Hauritz and the supposed part-timers Michael Clarke and Andrew Symonds, were made to look like world class spinners by the Pakistani batsmen. Granted the pitch would’ve turned even if Brad Haddin had a bowl but the way the Aussies turned things around was truly remarkable!

Dean Jones recently commented that he didn’t quite like the Aussies in their green kits and preferred the traditional yellow. Yellow is the colour that dominated for a decade and I believe the Pakistanis are just in awe of it. They seem to have this mental block against yellow. In green the Aussies look different, not so invincible. It could be all in the head and facts may not back the claim, but one thing is for sure, the Aussies sure know how to play the mental game. The Pakistanis were 90 for 0 and seemed to be cruising towards their second win in the tournament. But as soon as Clarke brought Hauritz in, got some close fielders in the ears of the Pakistani batsmen, they lost any semblance of logic that was visible earlier.

Surely the Pakistani batsmen must have played on pitches slower than these and even faced spinners much better than the Aussie ones in domestic cricket alone? But the amount of chat, the quality of close in fielders, an eager keeper and the confidence of a team that doesn’t worry too much about the failure, may be not. Wow! Two games ago Michael Clarke seemed like a decent batsman but an ordinary leader. On April 27, he looked like a complete cricketer.

Putting aside the Aussie brilliance for a moment, what is up with Pakistan and the third power play? Forty-five overs were bowled yesterday and it seemed the Pakistan team management didn’t even have it in their minds. Asad Rauf and Billy Bowden, it seemed, brought that up and the batsmen finally realised they had a lifeline.

Misbah-ul-Haq it seems wants to be dropped, Kamran Akmal has found a new favourite shot to get out to while Younus Khan is trying to force too much too soon.

The Pakistani team folded quite meekly in the third game and as Geoff Boycott repeatedly claimed on most days the opposition doesn’t even need to do anything, the Pakistanis do it themselves!

i have always noted, that Geoffrey Boycott is too harsh commenting on big hitters.whether it is sehwag, afridi, jayasuriya etc. etc. he is no master.i believe in “ATTACK IS BEST FORM OF DEFENCE” ,which teams must do.

The fact that Kamran Akmal is still on the team speaks volumes about the way Pakistani cricket works. I don’t even understand why PCB continues to bow before its Indian counterpart and maintain the ban on the ICL players. We’re sorely lacking in talent and the Indian board has shown their colors as far as supporting Pakistan Cricket is concerned. PCB has little to lose. Bring back the “renegade” players already and give this team a decent chance again. God knows we need something to feel good about Pakistan these days, might as well be cricket.

simply one thing is the difference btw the two team the way younis batted and look the way clarke batted…T20 on the corner why cant we back fawad alam lets put our money on him..i would say this result is because of lack of cricket for pakistan or either we have that mental blockade against stronger opposition and we could also say that it was not our day…it was funny and real when Geoffry boycott once said “there is only one team pakistan who from a winning stage have lost a match”

If we need to beat best teams in the world like Australia,India,SA then we need good players.
I won’t be suprised if we lose this series 4-1 because we just don’t have match winners. Our middle order is not up to the mark. Misbah isn’t either. He should quit. We are depending to heavily on Younis khan.

I suggest that Pakistan cricket bosses should not speak the word that later become thelaughing stock. Let them keep quiet and let the team performance speak.

Please don’t mistake me. I am not against loosing, I am just against the hollow talking.

The critically important issue here is the batting lineup, which has to be looked at microscopically, and needs an overhaul now because the traditional set-up never works in such games any more. Looking at the rest of the world vis-a-vis changes in the lineups, one can easily notice some sort of flexibility in practically every major team that one sees in modern times. Even the Australians themselves, not to mention India and South Africa, have rearranaged the batting order in an attempt to give the potential match-winners the chance to regain their stride and momentum as well as their confidence whenever the chips are down.

I dont think Australian did any kind of superb bowling to derail Pakistan.Pakistanis lost due to their own shot selections or may be their habit of getting under pressure quickly.Even if you are not engaged in lot of international criket, having a quite few experince players this low total should be achievable. Also now there is strong need to do all efforts to bring Muhammad Yousuf back because Misbah has shown he cannot be middle order strength. Also bringing Abdur Razzak will provide some strength in lower order…

Pakistan should ve won this match, players like Younis, Shoaib, Akmal, and Misbah should ve stayed at the wicket and scored some runs after such a perfect start. Pakistan batting line up was stroner then the previous match. I can not understand so young players are so average in fielding from Pakistan side, when you are young you are full of energy in the filed but look how our fielders were fielding. To be frank I think against this Australian side if we has Razak, Yousif and Imran Nazir we would ve won all matches. These players may also could have performed better if Pakistan team had played regular cricket. Look at Australia how long have it been playing cricket and againsgt top class teams, one must at least appreciate bowling which have not allowed the Aussies to score big targets, we need to improve batting and more cricket no matter where but cricket against good teams, we will be ok, do not expect miracles from this team. Look at our batting only half centuary have been scored so far, you need a big score 100+ from on of our top 5 batsmen and a good fifty if we have to win any of the matches otherwise no chance.

Well it is difficult to describe in words the huge disappointment over the Pakistani teams performance in the 3rd ODI against Australia. I cant understand why Fawad Alam is left out and Yasir Arfat is given preferance. You know the wicket is supporting the spinners and yet you select Yasir who is a medium pacer and a lot worse batsman than Fawad Alam. I think the selectors and the captain have been very harsh on Fawad and every time Fawad has been given a chance he has justified his selection. Misbah is just stupid he is a senior player and vice captain but instead of taking singles and rotating the strike he goes for the big one and as Waqar younis very truly commented that Misbah knows only 2 ways of batting one is blocking and the other is going for sixes he needs to review his technoque thoroughly otherwise it should be goodbye to him. I sincerly hope that som sense prevails in the team for the remaining 2 matches because I really think that the Pakistani team is better than the present Australian outfit in UAE.

I personally feel that besides not played much international cricket & besides the mental block of our nation dipping down in every aspect of life with every passing day, it was just lack of pure common sense.

Any common man can make out that after getting such a good start by the openers they just had to take singles, there was no need of playing unnecessary strokes.

Our batsmen fell to some very ordinary balling, there was nothing special that day with Aussie balling. It was just the mental block of our players.

I cant forget the griming face of our coach Intikhab Alam when our loosing captain was giving his foolish speech.

May Allah give strength to our nation, & give us enough confidence to thrash our opponents in every walk of life.

Now Pakistani need just one thing, try to play straight. Just follow the plan. “Australians are not aliens”, play them just as we do to Indians. keep the ball on ground, work it into the gap, not into the hand of a fielder. What Misbah had to do was just play for 30-40 runs, when he done that the score could have been 150+ that was the time to put more pressure on Australians, force a spinner for a six, push next one for a four. And then take a sharp single. All will be in order. Even if he got out at this stage then, Afridi can do finish off the job. Even when we were 9 wickets down, the target was still in sight, a few poor balls by Aussies could ave done the trick, we should have played till the end.

The main problem for the Pakistan players is they are deprived of sufficient exposure of international cricket as well as domestic cricket for which you can not blame the players. When Younus Khan and Co. won the first game, everybody in the land of the pure was happy and most of them thought that now beating Australia in the Emirates will be a ‘cake walk’

Nevertheless, those who really know ODI cricket at the highest level of the game especially ‘cricket in Australia’ were just giving everybody the ‘benefit of the doubt’ – a trait every cricketer must command and control since it is the essence of this noble game.

Now by winning the second and third ODI games in Dubai and Abu Dhabi consecutively and impressively, the Australians once again have proved beyond any reasonable doubt, their depth of professionalism in all departments of the game. For sure, they have battled, bowled and fielded better than their ‘Green Shirt Counterparts’ and earned well deserved victories in the two games.

As much as I want the Pakistani cricket team to win the next remaining matches in Abu Dhabi and Dubai including the first ever 20/20 match at the newly built and lush green cricket stadium in Dubai, I have a very strong feeling that they have to perform extra-ordinarily well and beyond the realistic estimation and imagination to win against one of the strongest cricket teams of the world under some very hot, tough, humid, dusty, salty and rough weather conditions.

There is not an iota of doubt in my mind that in order to beat the Aussies, someone in the green color caps has to perform exceptionally well, like Shahid Afridi taking six wickets in the first ODI in Dubai.

Realistically speaking, our batting line-up is still brittle, shaky and without any depth. We definitely need legendary Mohammad Yousuf, all rounder Abdul Razzaque as well as batsmen Imran Farhat and Imran Nazir in our ranks to beat great teams like Australia even at the so-called neutral venues like Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Dubai.

However, the million dollar question, as they say in America is that who is going to ‘bell the cat’ and let them play for Pakistan?

Does the current ‘Hand-picked, Inept and Un-elected” PCB administration has the guts as well as the grit to challenge the monopoly of BCCI and let all of its cricketers; who signed-up for ICL league in India for a honest and honorable livelihood (which by the way is the birth right of every human being), play in domestic first-class and one day cricket tournaments and be eligible on merits only, for the national team too?

With all due respect to the movers and shakers of cricket in the land of the pure, the answer to the above straight forward, frank, candid but intriguing question is “NO”

Best of luck to all Pakistani cricketers currently playing against the Australians in the Emirates, including all die hard Pakistani cricket fans and supporters like my long time pal “Sufi” Abdul Jaleel; the so-called “Chachaey Cricket of Pakistan” as well as all global cricket lovers.

My message to all of them at this crucial juncture in time and history is to “Keep it up, try your best and hang on tough”

Don’t forget that the world champions Australia capitulated in a worse fashion in the 1st ODI. They were 95/1 at one stage and went on to be 122/9 before getting all out for 168. The only difference that I can think about is that Pakistan has got a psychological barrier playing against the yellow shirts and even when they are in a winning position, they just can’t believe that they are winning against the mighty world champions. Its more in the minds rather than on the field. This psychological barrier has to be dealt a serious blow.

Why the heck did Younis have to make a fool of himself & the country by making a statement like “We’ll white-wash the Australians”. Next time, keep it in the locker room for your team, Younis, not for the media. Disgraceful!

one should not be too harsh on pakistan for once we need to understand that the pakistani players were a little under cooked for they are playing international match after a long time

It was a DISASTER!!! Misbah should be Sacked. I won’t consider him a good batsmen till he plays on bouncy pitches of South africa or Australia. That’s his real test.

We lost to bunch of part-time spinners.

Bottom line is that Pakistan is not a stable team. Stable team requires stable mind.

What a sheer disappointment and failure by Pakistani middle order batsmen not to have capitalized on a solid opening stand by Salaman Butt and Shezad. I often wonder as to why our batsmen panic and fart to the pavilion in the face of pressure? If Younis Khan can not find his batting form, then he should seriously consider dropping himself. Where is Imaran Nazir? Shahid Afridi must learn to bat with his brain. He can not hit every ball over the ropes.

I could not bear seeing Pakistan lose yesterday when the margin of runs was not a big one. Our boys will have to pick up their wrecked nerves and confidence to win the last two ODIs’ to win the series and make us all feel happy and proud.

lack of internatonal cricket will only produce mediocre performance.

Again, like everything else in Pakistan, lack of education is ruining cricket, previous renowned victims of this disease were Pakistani politics, hockey, Lollywood movies, and education itself :-)

There was nothing great about Australia’s performance. I mean yeah with the exception of their great fielding, disciplined bowling and decent energy, which is nothing more than a norm in their squad.

We did this to ourselves… as usual. What was misbah thinking? and Shahid lala? Younis could play better if he didnt find everything so funny!
